About James

Counsellor, trained at the University of Gloucestershire - working with trauma, addiction, and the things that are hard to put into words.

James Bentley

My story

I came into counselling in 2014 - not through textbooks, but through my own experience of being a client. Therapy changed my life, and that stayed with me. It's what led me to train and eventually build a career supporting others.

I started out working one-to-one with young people, and over time my work has developed into supporting people with addiction, trauma, and experiences of abuse. I completed my counselling degree at the University of Gloucestershire in 2017 and I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

How I work

Since qualifying, I've continued to develop my practice through further training in leadership, group therapy, Reiki, and Buddhist-informed approaches. I'm currently studying psychoanalysis, with the intention of moving into formal clinical training.

My work tends to focus on trauma, addiction recovery, self-esteem, and the challenges that can come with neurodivergence - including autism and ADHD. I also have a lot of experience working with anxiety, particularly health anxiety and intrusive thoughts.
